What Is a Psychological Assessment?

At Creative Psychological Services, four types of assessment are typically provided:

  • Psychoeducational assessment
  • Gifted assessment
  • ADHD assessment
  • Other clinical assessments

A psychological assessment is a structured method used by a psychologist that is designed to answer one or several questions. Examples of questions include: Can a diagnosis (such as depression, ADHD, or anxiety) be identified? Why is my child having difficulty in school? Does s/he have a learning disability? What treatment plan can best help a person? Along with carefully considered questions, the structure of a psychological assessment typically includes:

  • a clinical interview about current symptoms, personal history, and other background information
  • behavioural observations
  • standardized tests which can be questions or tasks completed by you or, with your permission, someone familiar with you such as a teacher or family member
  • with permission, a review of school, health or other records that may help inform the current situation

Assessment results typically include a response to the questions that initiated the assessment and recommendations for next steps. An assessment report is provided that details these results and describes how they were determined. The report is carefully reviewed with you as part of the assessment process. Beyond that, at your request, I am available to discuss an assessment report with school staff or a health practitioner should you wish.

Assessments, including psychoeducational assessments, typically can begin within two weeks of when they are first requested.

While similar, there can be differences among assessments depending on which type, the questions being considered, and other circumstances.
